Just got home from a late showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was fun, pretty, and as good as it needed to be to make a few billion dollars. J. J. Abrams’ fetishistic recapitulation of plot beats and set pieces from his source material was mostly in service to the project this time, as opposed to undermining it as in Star Trek: Into Darkness. I’d probably say it’s the third best Star Wars movie overall, and my sixth favorite movie of 2015, coming in well behind Mad Max: Fury Road, Ex Machina, Victoria, and Inside Out, and a bit behind Steve Jobs. I still haven’t seen The Martian or Room though, so I expect Star Wars: The Force Awakens to end up either seventh or eigth on the year for me. But I don’t regret the $12 or 2.5 hours I spent on it, the first time I can make that claim of any Star Wars I’ve seen in a theater.
